The Festival of Dasara falls on the 10th day of Navaratri, also known as Vijayadashmi, and is observed on the tenth day in the Hindu calendar month of Ashvin, the seventh month of the Hindu Luni-Solar Calendar. It celebrates the victory of good over evil. Goddess Durga killed the demon Mahisasura on this day. Also the name Mysuru comes from the demon’s name Mahishasura who was killed by the Goddess. Jumbo Savari

On the 10th day, that is on the day of Vijayadashami, the world-famous Jumbo savari will take place in Mysore. Jumbo Savari is the procession of Goddess Chamundeshwari on the Golden Ambarai weighing 700kg which is carried on the top of a decorated Elephant. The process starts from Ambavilas palace and goes till Bannimantap where the  Auspicious Banni tree is worshipped. The procession is accompanied by royal horses, camels, folk dance, music groups, and a police band. The Dasara will end with an event called the Torchlight parade, which takes place in the Bannimantap Parade ground in the evening. 

Exhibition

Another attraction of Dasara is the exhibition which will be organized on the exhibition ground which is opposite the Mysore palace’s Jaya Marthanda entrance. The Maharaja of Mysore Chamaraja Wodeyar X initiated this exhibition in the year 1880 with the intention to showcase the timely progress and development of the people of Mysore state (Mysore was a state before independence). This exhibition starts during Dasara and goes till the month of December, during thief time it attracts lots of natives and tourists. Different stalls selling clothes, fashion accessories, toys, and food stalls attract people to the exhibition. Significantly the government authorities like the Agricultural department, the horticultural department set up stalls where they display the importance of that particular sector and also their achievements. 

Elephant Safari

Elephant rides will always be thrilling for any age group, added to it, think about elephant rides in terrains of the jungle. If you are having an elephant ride on your bucket list then Kabini is the right place. Here you can ride on the tamed elephants with the expert guides, venturing in the jungle sitting on the top of the elephant’s back will definitely give you a fairly high chance to spot the tiger or any other wild animals and birds. A boat safari on the Kabini river is the perfect way to dive into the lush green surrounding of Kabini. On the boat safari, you will be taken into the deep forest of Kabini. As you sail on the boat you will feel the presence of villages around the Kabini belt and then you will get away in the dense forest surrounding.  You can watch the marsh crocodiles in their natural adobe . Smooth-coated otters, water birds are a real treat to the eyes. The safari takes almost 3 long hours and it starts at 6.30 am and the last safari will be back at 6.30 pm.
