Kabini, the home of the wild in South India, is the perfect weekend destination from Bangalore. The backwaters of the Kabini river, coupled with the Nagarhole National Park, provide the ultimate haven for wildlife. There is a multitude of things to do in Kabini, from simply taking a stroll around the edges of the reserve to diving in headfirst for the safaris and backwater rides. We talk about some of the things to do around Kabini Reserve in this article!

Guided Nature Walks

The best way to experience the true nature of a forest landscape is on foot. Going on guided nature walks with a trained naturalist is a delightful activity around Kabini. It gives you the opportunity to take things slowly, which also makes it easier to spot wildlife. This is a prime activity for spotting microfauna like insects, reptiles, and wild flora. It’s also the ideal way to become a birdwatcher. Spotting an Indian Vulture, or admiring a Crested Serpent Eagle dive down to grab a snake, all exhilarating sights.

River safari

Kabini river is located adjacent to the Nagarhole National Park, a 650 sq km expanse of tropical deciduous forest. The backwaters themselves are a wonderful ecosystem, providing a home and also sustenance for a variety of wildlife. Watch an Osprey hunt for fish in the waters, or river otters squabble with each other. Elephants come up to the water to drink their fill and just sometimes, a big cat might just silently wander up to the waters looking for a meal. All these can be witnessed up close with a river safari, where you get right in the middle of the action but still maintain a respectable distance to the wildlife.

Jeep Safari

Of course, a trip to Kabini would be incomplete without a jeep safari into the Nagarhole National Park. With a trained naturalist on board, explore the various sectors of the park on a 3-hour drive. Maybe you’ll find the famed Black Panthers of Kabini, or watch the migrating elephants head to the backwaters. Of course, Kabini is tiger land, and there are extremely good chances that ol’ stripey will make an appearance too! Head out to the reserve in a jeep during both morning and evening hours, for the most opportune sightings.

Whatever activity you decide, our in-house naturalists at Red Earth Kabini are there to assist and guide you through the forests and the backwaters safely. Our sustainable eco-resort is the perfect weekend getaway from Bangalore, being only a few hours away.
